Like many of my constituents, I am a passionate campaigner for the environment and I am keen as your MP to make sure our campaigns have a real impact on legislation.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden writes for The Wealden Eye magazine…
It was fantastic news to be the first country to commit to a net-zero economy and it was great to see that we have also agreed to support and expand offshore wind power and have made the historic commitment to close all coal-fired power stations by 2025.
As a Maritime Minister, I led the high ambition coalition to reach an historic agreement at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) that will see a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 50% in 2050. This year I worked towards launching the worlds’ first clean maritime plan which looks at emissions from ships and ports to ensure protection of our environment and oceans.
The environment and Climate Change have consistently been the primary concern of students of all ages that write to me or whom I have met when they have come to Parliament. Hailsham’s students have also presented their concerns about our air quality to ocean health. It is incredibly encouraging to see so many young people enthusiastic to be involved in protecting the environment and asking MP’s what can be done on both a local and national level to tackle this issue.
It is great to see that campaigning has made a real difference but there is much more work to be done and I look forward to further updates on these issues.
My summer surgery tour across Wealden is about to commence and I will be joined by two Councillors – Bob Standley and Ann Newton – to help with local council issues. Details will shortly appear on my website and in the local papers. We will be in Hailsham on Wednesday 28th August, Crowborough and Uckfield on Friday 30th August and probably in Wadhurst and Fletching on Monday 2nd September. Please do get in touch with my office email@example.com if you have any matters you wish to discuss with me or to attend one of my surgeries.
