Local skip business provides essential service during COVID lockdown

August 27, 2020

Since March, many shops and businesses across the country simply closed their doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, the team at a Hailsham-based skip hire & waste management company, PJ Skips, were working harder than normal, as H M Government
designated waste management as a critical sector during the crisis and demand by customers grew to an unprecedented level.

Employees from PJ Skips worked all through lockdown serving front-line services, their supply chains, essential businesses and the general public. The company prioritised supply of skips to all of the hospitals in East Sussex, care homes, nursing homes and other front-line services.

Managing Director, Nick Ellwood commented; “Reports of fly-tipping in rural communities soared by 300 percent during the lockdown period, linked to the closure of rubbish tips, which left many people with nowhere to take their unwanted goods. We decided that it was important that people had an affordable and environmentally-friendly option to dispose of their waste. We conducted a full risk assessment and put in place rigorous procedures to ensure safety of our staff and customers – as this is our number one priority.”

He added; “We continue to provide skips, haulage and recycled products to commercial businesses and domestic customers across East Sussex. We also
support Hailsham Foodbank with a substantial monthly sponsorship, helping put food on the table for local families and neighbours who are struggling to get by, especially during this challenging time.”
