Wealden District Council’s commitment to supporting local business was demonstrated on 12 March at an innovative “Marketing Your Town” event which focused on regeneration initiatives and ideas within their towns and villages.
The workshop, delivered by Action for Market Towns and Hidden Britain, and linked to the Council’s Streets Ahead initiative, was designed to help local chambers, businesses, Councillors, community groups and town teams make the most of available assets and opportunities to boost footfall within the high street and overall visitor numbers. Topics that were covered included what makes a community unique and how to use this as a selling point, the principles of destination marketing, the sharing of best practice and how best to work in partnership to improve the visibility of a community. Communication methods discussed ranged from the traditional to the cutting edge of social media and there was a constant focus on achieving practical and deliverable solutions.
“The Marketing Your Town workshop was a great success – informative, well presented and thought provoking,” said Councillor Roy Galley, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Regeneration. “It will really help the towns and villages within Wealden to make the most of their resources.”
The workshop was attended by representatives from town and parish councils across Wealden and beyond, local town teams such as Hailsham Forward, and from local business interests including chambers of commerce.
Presentations were followed by workshop sessions were led by rural tourism and marketing expert Kevin Baughen from Hidden Britain, together with Mike King, Town Alive’s Senior Research and Town Centres Consultant.
